Top Electric Two Wheelers available in India
Hello friends, once again welcome to my series of blogs on electric vehicles. In last blog we have seen about basics of electric cars and its comparison with conventional internal combustion engine vehicles.
Now in this blog we will see about electric two wheeler, what is current market situation, customer response and what are different options available.
If you compare with electric cars , electric two Wheeler are fairly known to many of us. I have seen many electric two wheeler in tier 2 cities as well. But with over all increase in demand for 4 wheeler electric vehicles, this segment also getting mainstream attention.
In fact, many business analyst predicting 2/3 wheeler electrical vehicle market will be more prominent than 4 wheeler at least in near future. You have seen below images in news that OLA Auto is setting up big plant for electric 2 wheeler and they have also commenced start of sale for these vehicle.
If you see below table of sales figures, in calendar year 2020 total sales stood by 25598 while in first half of 2021, no. of electric vehicles sold is 29288. This indicate that electric 2W industry is growing at very rapid rate.

Sales figures of electric vehicles:
If you just search on internet you will find lots of electric 2 wheeler manufacturers. However major OEM's which are into selling of electric 2 wheelers are Hero, Ather, Bajaj, TVS, Okinawa etc.If you see below table of sales figures, in calendar year 2020 total sales stood by 25598 while in first half of 2021, no. of electric vehicles sold is 29288. This indicate that electric 2W industry is growing at very rapid rate.
However it's still far from conventional 2 wheeler, where about 12,00,621 no. of vehicles were sold in month of July itself.
Hero Motocorp : With about 30 % of market share, Hero Motocorp is leading in sales of electric two wheeler. Company has sold about 11432 units in 1st six months of 2021.
Hero electric is getting advantage of being one of early company who invested in this industry. They have about 100000 unites per annum production capacity in Ludhiana, which manufactures a varied range of products. Hero electric also engaged in developing strong network of more than 600 dealers, most for any EV brand.
This is followed by Okinawa Autotech which is Japanese company with 5,903 units (average monthly sales of 843 units), and Ampere Vehicles with 3,899 units (average 557 units a month).Overall these three OEMs have a combined market share of 70 percent from electric two wheeler space.
Another upcoming company is Ather Energy which is continuously expanding its network. They have set up a new plant in Hosur. The start-up reportedly sold around 3,758 units compared to 2,972 e-scooters in 2020 and 2,290 units in 2019.
Electric Two Wheelers:
If you have see electric 2 wheelers from most of the companies these in scooter segment. Scooters makes obvious choice, since scooters are more popular in conventional 2 wheelers also. It is evident from Ola electric setting up plant specifically for electric scooters, Honda already have world larget scooter plant in Gujarat (making conventional scooter ).
Electric models available in Indian having models from high speed and low speed range, we will see them.
a) High Speed Scooters:
High speed in electric 2 wheeler are referred to above 70 KmPH. There performance matches to conventional 2 wheelers. Major products available are shown in below image i.e. Bajaj Chetak, TVS iQube, Ather 450 x and upcoming Ola S1.
If you see prices of these scooters are more than 1 lakh. These values will definitely come down due to various FAME II schemes.

Below table shows comparison of major specification between these vehicles. Here Bajaj chetak, TVS i Qube uses BLDC motors whicle Ather and Ola uses different type of Motor. In terms of Motors Power, Ola S1 is most powerful which has 8500 W motor.
Range is most important parameter for electric vehicles, which depends on the battery capacity Olas S1 claimed to be having maximum battery capacity i.e. 3.97 KWh which support its 118 Km range. (Which is maximum as compare to its rivals). Surprisingly Ola S1 having maximum max speed i.e. 115 KmPh and least time to recharge i.e. 4.75 hours. Off course these values just claimed and vehicle yet to be launched. Ola will be starting sell of S1 model from 15th September and actual delivery will start from month of October this year.
b) Low Speed Electric Scooters:
These are entry level electric two wheller scooter which is having moderate speeds.

Below is comparison of major specification of these vehicles.
These electric two wheelers used in variably used BLDC type of motors. These vehicles having very less speed, from 25 KMPH to 58 KMPH. These vehicles having lesser battery capacity which reflects into there lesser range of vehicles.
3) E bikes:
Overall there are very few electric and bikes are available i.e. Revolt RV 400 and Joy e bike monster.
